 | My biggest brown trout |
  Joey, one of our regular lodge
guests and fly shop patron had a great stay last week. Good thing he got the Drennan tippet and leader material because this fish probably put his line to the test. He and his group had a great time staying at our lodge and getting the inside scoop every night from John. John is always more than willing to give fishing tips to our customers. Joey said that this was the "biggest brown trout he ever caught" and below he tells his story. His fish was caught on December 11th.
It was about noon, we were fly fishing some new water and whippa put Jeremy and I on a run. I was above and Jeremy was about 20 ft below. Two big rocks at the head of the pool created an eddy, which then turned, into a slow moving slick at the tail out. Casts had to be precise or the drift would move too fast. Jeremy fished it quickly and started to move down stream. I had a little more faith in the water and continued to fish the seam thoroughly all the way down. I would cast up stream into the eddy and work my drift on both sides. “There has to be a fish in here,” I kept telling myself. The water looked too good to pass up. It was one of those holes that many people wouldn’t bother fishing. Fast pocket water, technical casts and difficult to wade. About half way through the run I checked my set up to make sure nothing had gone awry. Everything was still in tact – about 9.5 feet of leader, 2.5 feet of tippet, a couple small shots, and the magic light pink egg pattern. I got my rig back in the water and started to make longer casts up stream trying to maximize the length of my drift. I had the hole to myself now so I worked it the best I could. Nearing the end of the run I still had faith a big fish was laying in there, I made a cast up stream and watched my indicator as it moved toward me at perfect speed. Just as my line passed me the indicator moved – a downstream hook set and the battle was on. I hollered to Jeremy who was about 75yards down stream, I knew this was a big fish. My line shot into the fast water and the reel was singing. I positioned myself on the peninsula behind me but only for a moment. The fish brought me down stream taking as much line as I would gain. Jeremy got the first glance of the fish as we were bringing it in “oh my God dude.” We finally landed the beast after a lengthy battle. I don’t know how much she weighed but it was difficult to hold up. This was my biggest Brown Trout ever. Thanks Jeremy
