 | Summer Rainbow Trout and Kids |
It makes me feel good when I see kids out fishing and not getting into trouble. Two kids today were fishing out behind our shop and caught a rainbow trout and another fish that looked to be an atlantic salmon. They were tickled pink and were proud to show me their catches that they had stuffed in their camo fanny pack. I soon
realized that their fish looked pretty small so I measured both of them. The rainbow trout was 13 inches and the atlantic salmon was 11 inches. The rainbow trout must be 15 inches and the atlantic salmon must be 25 inches which it states in the NYS Regulations booklet. The sad thing is that these kids didn't realize it and so I marked their fishing poles with a permanent black marker to show them where 15 inches is. I gave them each a regulation booklet and showed them where to find the laws. I also explained to them that they can't keep anymore fish today and to try again tomorrow. I also explained that they should practice "Catch and Release" so these fish can get bigger and that they will have another chance to catch them. They told me they were going to go home and clean their catches and have their mom cook them up for dinner. So where are the parent's and do they fish? Does it matter? Shouldn't they explain to their kids that there's certain laws, rules, and regulations...and for a reason? Like I said, I'm glad they were out fishing rather than getting into trouble or doing drugs, etc. I just hope they will appreciate what we have here in Pulaski and the importance of "Catch and Release" and what it means to be a good fisherman. I'm not saying they can't keep a fish, they're allowed to keep "3 in any combination, not to include more than 1 rainbow trout or steelhead in the tributaries of Lake Ontario". So if you are a parent, please explain to your children about fishing and that we have to obide by regulations and that there are regulations for a reason. If you don't fish, bring your child to our shop and we'll explain what they'll need to know. We'll also show them what they'll need to go fishing with. These kids just had a small rod and a lure, nothing else. No plyers, no clippers, no net, no stringer, no hooks or line.... hey but they still caught fish right?! It's best to be prepared and have the basics and more importantly, what they can keep and what they have to throw back!
