 | Tons of Steelhead: Pulaski NY Salmon River |
This is what I'm hearing and seeing from our shop customers, lodging guests, and guides. There's "Tons of Steelhead" in the Salmon River. The only problem is this: There's tons on stringers too! Some of the anglers out fishing on the Salmon River don't even know what kind of fish they have. It's amazing. One guy saw an angler with 2 steelhead on his stringer and the law is only one. The way to tell the difference between a steelhead and a coho salmon since they can
both be very silver, is this: a steelhead's inside mouth will be all milky white and a coho salmon's will be white and black. It's a good idea to know what you're catching and also to read your regulations booklet. It's a shame most don't. Oh well....that's the difference between a true angler and a lazy "I just wanna catch whatever" angler. So, back to the steelhead....there are some really good numbers and the experienced anglers I spoke with today said that they were very suprised to see so many. They said they couldn't tell whether or not they were Skamania Steelhead or Washington Steelhead however they knew for a fact they were steelhead. They're gobbling up everything from egg patterns to a variety of bug patterns. In this picture, Tom Kelly from VA is holding a real pretty male. You can also see the two lamprey eel marks on the fish. Man, those damn things. I'd hate to be a fish and have something stuck to my side like that. Must be terrible. Okay, so that's my report. My guides tell me the bite in the mouth of the Salmon River NY is on one minute, off the next, then on. It's weird. The lake is still doing good and the numbers are moving closer and closer. The fish continue to keep coming into the Salmon River so for all of you that think it's not good fishing, you're wrong! Yeah, there's low water, but until there's NONE, then .......well, there won't be any fish. Tonight I took a video out back to prove this and by tomorrow am I'll have it up for the world to see. It will show 3 hook ups in a matter of minutes, proving there's plenty of fish to be caught. The weekend is coming. Hope you still keep your reservations......you'll be sorry if you cancel.
