 | Pulaski New York: Salmon River Fishing Report 9-28-07 |
This is my 14 yr. old nephew, Suede, with a King Salmon on out back behind our shop. I was talking to one of our lodging guests and another yelled to me, "Hey, your nephew has one on!!!" So, I ran and got the camera and took a picture. It was pretty exciting and we were all very proud of him. Guide Mike came down the deck steps to watch and my husband, John, looked on from the top deck. Everyone was watching Suede fight his King Salmon. It splashed here and there but did not jump. Suede kept his cool and played the fish so smooth. When it
was nearing the time to net the fish, I asked Suede to back up and beach it. As he did, we were all disappointed to see that the salmon was hooked in the ass! Man. After all that. Oh well, it was fun to watch and one of our lodging guests netted the salmon and removed the hook and let it go. It was a female Chinook (King) Salmon full of eggs. She was darkened up a bit and that means that she's been in the river for a while now. Most likely taking her sweet 'ol time trying to make it up to the hatchery to spawn....hopefully she'll make it but she's out there for you to catch (legally) that is. When it comes to questions about salmon fishing such as the following: 1. what type of rod should I use and what type of line? 2. does it really matter what size hook I use and what type of bait to put on the hook? 3. what about the hooks? How come there's so many.....which is best for me and my set up? 4. what color egg sacs should I buy and how should I store them if I have some leftover? 5. do salmon really bite? Is it because they're hungry or because they're mad? 6. should I spend more for a better quality fly reel and what's the difference? 7. what's the difference between stocking foot waders and boot foot waders? what about felt or no felt? 8. do I have to display my fishing license?

SALMON RIVER REPORT CONTINUED: Today was overcast in Pulaski NY and the am bite was hot. The afternoon bite slowed and the fishing pressure increased as more and more anglers arrived to fish. The Douglaston Salmon Run was packed with people today and our lodging guests that went said it was crazy. While some of them caught fish.....(some were virgins and hadn't a clue), others hooked up but did not land anything. The mouth of the Salmon River is still boiling with fish and the lower end of the river is the best bet. So, from the Route 3 Bridge in Port Ontario to the 81 Hole would be considered the "Lower River". When the motherload comes in, you better be in the lower end of the river because even if you accidentally throw your line in, you will hook up. That's what it's like when the motherload comes in. Just tonight around 12:00 am one of my lodging guests heard 12 splashes out back in the "Town Pool" within 15 minutes so that means that there's fish moving. I love to hear it.....and you can even smell it.......yeah, the smell of fish in the air means it's coming soon.
Stop in and we'll let you know which flies are working best, which colored egg sacs, immitation baits, etc.
