Lower Fly Fishing Zone, Altmar NY: Now Open!!!

GeneralThe Lower Fly Fishing Only Zone located above the bridge in Altmar, NY, is now open for fishing.  You must practice catch and release only and this doesn't mean man handling the fish, kicking it up on shore, or sticking your fingers or your entire hand for the matter up in it's gills.  Sound familiar?  Well it should because as sad as it sounds, it does happen and there are "so-called" anglers that do this.  If you see this happen, please speak up and help educate the angler on how to properly handle a fish.  If

you're not sure, come in our shop and buy a Boga Grip.  It's a great catch and release fishing tool to use.  Enjoy the fishing up there folks and practice good sportsmanship.  Don't over crowd a fly or spey fisherman...give them room.  Be courteous.  Take your picture quickly and release the fish.  Holding it by it's tail and moving it back and forth is not the right way......just hold it gently and push water in front of it's face creating lots of oxygen bubbles and this will help your New York Steelhead recover much more quickly.  We see the other method all the time and it's wrong.....gills go one way only folks.  If you have questions, please feel free to stop by our shop and ask.  Last but not least, I was up in Altmar around 12:30 pm and there were 24 cars and 6 drift boat trailers in the LFZ parking lot.  I'd say it was a busy opening day up there!  If you were fishing there today, please send me your pictures and I'll post them.
