 | Fishing Reports from the Salmon River |
Hi Everyone! Dawn Rucando here giving you the latest fishing reports for the Salmon River in Pulaski NY. I speak with several guides on a regular basis and the consensus is still the same...it's been an outstanding steelhead season since October 2007 and is still going strong now. There's a mix of steelhead in the river that have already spawned and ones that have not yet. The water levels were extremely high the past two days and some of our top guides
fished it finding their customers fish. Can you believe it? I know, they're the best drift boat guides on the river because they always have a Plan B and a Plan C. The water level is still very high for bank anglers and to be quite honest, our resivoir is too small. It fills up fast with rain and you have to take the snow into consideration too...that's the snow on the tughill plateau. Factor in warm temperatures and you have high water. The best thing for you to do is to call us or a local reputable shop and get the "low down". I sure wouldn't want to travel a long way (being new to the area)and be disappointed with a blown out river if I were going to bank fish. You can always hire a guide...one that is capable of high water...not all Salmon River NY drift boat guides can run their boats in high water levels. The great thing about our area is options. Heck....the guide I was talking to the other night said the crappy fishing was going on and people were lined up with their lanterns fishing. Soon the bullhead will be biting too! There's so many things you can do and it would never be a complete "wash out" if you came to Pulaski with bad weather. I know, I know, it sucks if the weather isn't perfect however it's always good to get away from the rat race right?
Some of the full time drift boat guides are preparing to make a change over. This happens every year. Some of the guides are also Lake Charter Captains and they like to troll the shorelines of Lake Ontario for football size brown trout that come in close for the warmer temperatures. Others like to go turkey hunting and do what they call a "Blast & Cast". They'll take you turkey hunting and then out fishing on the Salmon River. It's a great time! The third Saturday in May is our walleye pike season and that means that everyone who loves to eat walleye will be out fishing. These are a very popluar fish and now is the time to book those trips. Our top guides will take you where the fishing is best and that's what they do best. It hurts our guides deeply if they get skunked and it does happen, not often, but it does.
Stay tuned..............
P.S. If you want to come and fish the Keys with us, now is a great time to book your giant tarpon trip as they're coming in from the ocean and laying up in the backcountry. We can supply you with lodging too! This also applies to those Salmon River guides who want to take a break and go fishing with the Rucando's. Think you can handle it? Don't say we never asked you! We're booking for May and June trips now. Call for available dates: 305-664-9988
