 | Fishing Conditions In Pulaski NY |
Today started out a bit overcast but the sunshine came out eventually. The temperatures made it up to about 49 degrees which was a lot colder than the previous 70-80 degree weather we had last week. We have had some rain and it did bring up the water level in the Salmon River. Not to worry though, it's only 2040 cfs and will be released at 1800 cfs until Friday, May 2nd. It's best to keep any eye on the Pulaski NY weather report and go from there. I can
say that there are still a ton of New York Steelhead in the Salmon River and they are throughout the entire river. The hatchery still has 10 holding tanks with so many steelhead (mostly males) in them that you can't fit another steelhead. They're able to go when they want to go says, Fran Verdoliva, the head honcho. I spoke with Andy Greulich, one of the hatchery managers and he said that they reached their NY Steelhead quota in early April of 2 million eggs and even went over their quota by taking an additional 400,000. Their Skamania Steelhead quota was 125,000 eggs and they were only able to take 124,000 eggs so that's still pretty good even though they fell short by a thousand. Andy also said that they "could have" taken even more Salmon River Steelhead eggs however they just didn't have enough room for them all. Can you imagine? So now you believe us? It's true. This is the best steelhead trout return for the Salmon River in Pulaski and Altmar, NY since the late 1980's. I have spoken with several of our Salmon River drift boat guides and they all agree that the steelhead fishing will be very good on the Salmon River for at least another entire month! Let's keep our fingers crossed with the rain and water temperatures. It's best to keep checking back in and looking at the weather and water forecast on a daily basis because things change on a flip of a dime up here.
We'll be tarpon fishing and bone fishing in the Florida Keys until June however we'll still be reporting on the Salmon River and taking reservations for both. If you still want to hire a traditional fly fishing drift boat guide, not a snagger or a lifter, please call us. We have a couple of excellent guides that still have some open dates for the Salmon River before they head to Alaska or other parts of the country to fish. You'll want to make your reservations before they officially change over. Get ahold of us and we'll take care of the rest.
P.S. I saw some HUGE steelhead in those holding tanks up at the hatchery.......some that had tails as big as mud sharks.........chinook salmon that is. They were all of 20 pounds! No B.S. folks, the fishing is great.
