 | Meet the Rucando's: A fishing family |
Hi everyone! We hope you're having a fun summer so far. We'll be getting the fly & tackle shop ready this summer for this year's salmon run which will kick off on Labor Day weekend which falls on August 29 through September 1, 2008. We're looking forward to another great season! So far it's been a rainy summer and John has been casting his T&T spey rod out back when he has a chance. He's seen some nice Skamania Steelhead and what looked like a King Salmon which is rare this time of year but not impossible due to colder air & water temperatures. Currently we're taking reservations for charter trips on Lake Ontario, NY, one of the "Great Lakes" and we're also taking reservations for streamside fly fishing trips on the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY for the summer and the fall. Early season night time salmon trips from a boat with no
waders required are the first to go and they will be from the first of September until the end of the month. Phone calls and emails are starting to pick up and people are calling around to make reservations. Some are price shopping and others are researching the "best" time to come and fish for New York Salmon. I will post a story about that next. For now, we are the Rucando's and we're a family of fishing. We will be going into our sixth season with our fly & tackle shop, wife approved lodge, and premiere guide service. John has been guiding on the Salmon River "legitimately" since the early 1980's and has been "actually" fishing it since 1977. Born and raised in Port Reading, N.J., he always made time to go fishing. He hated school and the hussle and bussle of the city life and heard about Pulaski, NY from a friend. They split the gas cost and made the 300 mile drive. After they slept in the back of their pick up truck they fished for Chinook (King) Salmon that were in the high 30 and even the 40 pound range. This was way back then and until this day, John is one of the most respected drift boat and bank guides on the Salmon River. He is available this season for fly fishing trips from Monday to Friday. He does not fish on Saturdays or Sundays. John's nature is quiet and laid back while he figures out where you're coming from. He's got a great sense of humor and is very patient and forgiving. He loves his blues and jazz music and the therapy his guitars give him. He's a man of pride and integrity and loves his wife and daughter more than fishing. John turned 50 on May 9. Dawn Rucando, will be his wife of 8 years (August 19, 2008) and manages most of the day to day internet, lodging, and guided trip business. Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, her parents moved to Pulaski New York in 1985 and built their log cabin home in 1987 and just had it's 20th anniversary as "Hidden Acres Lodge". Dawn gets her love of the outdoors from her father, Ken, who was an avid hunter and fisherman, and later, a self taught taxidermist. Dawn is an outgoing no nonsense business woman who is always saying or doing something outrageous just for the "Shock Factor". She hates to learn the hard way and passes crucial information on to her customers saving them time and money. She can make you wet your pants in laughter or in shear fear. Her sense of humor is along the lines of John's. She's into pratical jokes and keeping things exciting. She makes things happen while others wonder if they can. Dawn will turn 37 July 31. In the year 2000 John and Dawn wed and 5 years later they had their daughter, Miss. Isla Morada, which is named after their winter home, Islamorada (one of the Florida Keys). They chose this name because of it's meaning, "Island Home/Purple Island". It represented something they both loved and something that was fishing related. While there are no salmon or steelhead in the Florida Keys, there are tarpon, bonefish, and permit! "I-lah" is how it's pronounced and for most of you out there reading this, you already know this because it's probably a place you have fished before. It's rare to meet a fly fisher who hasn't fished the Florida Keys. If you have not yet, please consider us as we will be returning there this winter in the month of December. Isla is a beautiful little girl who can be shy and yet very outgoing. There's no doubt she's a Rucando! She loves to play with her baby dolls, color, sing, dance, and go fishing! Her favorite fish is tarpon. She has been out on the family boat since she was one month old and at age 2 and one month she remembers her dadddy fighting a tarpon on a self tied fly and it "jumping over her head". She has never stopped talking about that time and while it really came up along the side of the boat and jumped and shook it's head causing some water to splash on her, she still feels like it actually "jumped over her head"! She can name several fish just by looking at them and someday she will be a great fly fisher like her daddy. As for mommy, she's a bait fisher! If you'd like to get to know the Rucando's, please give them a shout. They pride themselves in "honest, no B.S. information and fishing reports (based upon your fishing skill level, that is). They will give you the low down on the area and where to go, where not to, etc, etc. If you want the inside scoop, like to have fun, are not a prude, believe in catch & release....alive that is....want to learn the right way as far as fishing goes and not fishing the lazy/snagging way, share some jokes and funny stories, become a better angler, and enjoy life, well??????? Need we say more?
Book now and get the best dates. Book last minute and take a chance. Either way, call or email us. When emailing, please leave us your BEST number and Dawn or John Rucando will call you back personally.
