For those of you who have always wondered about Alaska and how it really is, well, here it is, really. I'm here in Alaska on business and to see for myself what the state has to offer. Some of our Salmon River NY drift boat guides are fishing here in the state of Alaska and come every spring and summer for the salmon and trout runs. At least seven guides come to mind and are spread out fishing the King Salmon near Bristol Bay, Sterling, Kasilof and Kenai. While in a
local farm supply store I came across the local paper and it's showing a huge King Salmon that was caught on the Kenai River on July 11, 2008. While it's not the state record, it's about twenty five pounds shy. Still a whopper of a fish for any angler! The state record was caught on May 17, 1985 by Les Anderson and it weighed 97 pounds, 4 ounces and was caught on the Kenai River. I'm on the Kenai peninsula and I"m staying in the city of Kenai. It has everything from McDonalds to Home Depot and also a Key Bank which is great because there's one in Pulaski, NY too! So, I'm right at home here and I don't need for anything except for some warm weather. It's cold here and to describe it better, it's like a cold fall day here in Kenai, AK. I'm in layers with jeans, jacket, and boots. Somedays I wear my sneakers. My experience so far in the state of Alaska is this: Everything is BIG! From the mountains to the moose to the mosquitos, they're all BIG. I've seen bald eagles, mama moose and her calf, king salmon, dolly varden, tall pine trees, dead (scary looking) pine trees, tons of small lakes, otters, seals, reindeer, halibut, and razor clams. I have not seen a bear in person yet. If I do, I hope it's from a drift boat and not on land. I think I would pee my pants if that happened! I'm not kidding about the mosquitos. They are three times the size of Pulaski, NY mosquitos and I can't hear them coming, I SEE them. They come out in the evening like normal bugs. The hours of daylight are about 18. It does take some time to get use to but it's not that bad. It never gets completely dark this time of year. Dark would be like evening before sunset where we are. All in all it's pretty amazing. There's a few lodges and outfitters that I would recommend and there are some that are complete b.s. I am here to see first hand what is going on and if it's really worth the trip. I would say, "yes" however, I would want the truth on the lodging and the outfitters. You really have to be careful especially when you are coming such a long way. If you would like information, please don't hesitate to ask. Alaska does not have to cost $5K per person! In ending, our Salmon River in Pulaski, NY is by far the best king salmon fishing river on the east coast and the grass is not always greener on the other side.
