Skamania Steelhead: They're in the Salmon River NY

GeneralNY Skamania Steelhead caught behind Yankee FlyYou can catch fish like this in the Salmon River pretty much all year round.  The best time to catch them is from around the middle of May until around December.  While they are steelhead, they are a different strain of steelhead.  The Salmon River NY Fish Hatchery clips their adipose fin which is that "thumb-looking-like fin" on the top of their body before it's tail.  If it's clipped, it's a Skamania

Another Salmon River NY Skamania SteelheadSteelhead!  They fight great and can get up to over 20 pounds. Yes!  It's true.  Come see the 24 pounder caught in August of 2006.  It was caught on an egg sack and the guy who caught it thought it was a King Salmon, that's how big it was.  So, there are trophy fish in the Salmon River and they hit anything from worms, spinners, artificial baits, and flies.  Please pay attention to your NYS regulation booklet and read the rules.  They change after August 15th.  This picture was taken by Dawn Rucando behind her fly & tackle shop at the "Town Pool", one of the best fishing pools on the Salmon River NY!  It was taken in July of 2007.

Check out the date on this picture.  Another NY Skamania Steelhead.  This one was caught on a fly and then released.  It was caught by one of our Drift Boat Guides, "Guide Mike" and it sure is a nice male.

The other day I had an email from a guy that said he has fished the Salmon River NY for 30 years and has never caught a Skamania Steelhead before so I am baffled?  Maybe he didn't know it was a Skamania Steelhead?  Most people don't.  So, it's important to know what it is you are catching.  If you are not sure, take a digital picture of it and send it to us and we'll tell you.  The Salmon River in Pulaski, NY has some really nice fish.  We measure our fish in pounds, not inches!  And yes, SIZE DOES MATTER!!!!
