 | Salmon River Fishing Conditions Report: 3-14-09 |
We had a really great day today with our clients, Will & Carolyn from New York City. Here's will LOCKED UP with a Salmon River NY Spring Steelhead. The morning started out pretty cold and we all had our thermal underwear on! Will got to experience what 30+ degree water temperature felt like on his family jewels. He did say later to his wife,
Carolyn, that he definitely had "shrinkage!" This type of fishing is not for sissies or cry babies. It's a serious angling adventure with a experienced high water guide service. Being "City Slickers", they did lose a bunch of bites and we call this "farming-out". We had a lot of laughs and a great time with two wonderful people who are still on their honeymoon only being married just 6 short months. Ahhh....I remember those days! We ate like Kings & Queens, thank you both for feeding us and we are at a tie with our fishing bet. Frank & Gail from PA should know what bet we're talking about and so far, Will & Carolyn are at a tie so we hope to break it tomorrow and announce the winner.....to be continued......so stay tuned for that. As for the day on the Salmon River, it started out cold, turned warm with the bright sunshine and ended that way. We had multiple hookups and landed 2 NY Steelhead in the net. One was small and the other a slob weighing in on the Boga Grip at over 16 pounds. It was released alive for you to catch and if you want to learn how, just give us a shout as we do have openings during the upcoming week. We saw tons of NY Drift Boats and Fishing Guide Services along with Lawn Enforcement (NYSDEC) and Fun Fishers on the Salmon River and it appeared that everyone was enjoying themselves. It was just a nice brisk spring day. Thanks to all the NY Drift Boat Guides who were considerate and parked appropriately in the upper parking lot in Altmar, NY. As for the ones who didn't, well, you're only going to hurt yourselves in the long run.
The report in my opinion....if you want to be put on the steelhead, have a great time doing it while laughing and learning, give me a shout on my cell 315-489-6115. The Salmon River NY is running high and it's my opinion that it's very dangerous for bank anglers, especially ones that do not know what they're doing. The water is very cold and you don't want to die! So please be careful. Also, there seems to be some inexperienced drift boat rowers....whether they're NYS Guides or not, I'm not sure however we saw one driftboat ram into the bank & trees. Apparently the man rowing does not have a clue and is rowing in high water conditions. I can only pray that he doesn't hurt himself or his fishing buddy/client? One drift boat we saw looked pretty dangerous with 4 anglers and the boat looked to us as if one wrong move and it could fill with water and see ya later to the 4 anglers. Pleae be careful out there folks. The Salmon River NY is very strong and has taken lives. It's no joke.
You can check the Salmon River NY flow on the Water Line Link on the front page of my website, look for "Waterline" and also check the current water level at the Pineville Bridge where there's an actual gauge. If you have NO CLUE on how to figure the water level out and what it means, you really need to hire our guide service and we'll teach you all about it.
We'll see you tomorrow for another report. Our Spring Steelhead Season is in full swing right now and we're taking reservations for guided fishing trips. Weekends fill first while weekdays remain unbooked until the last minute. Also there's less people on the Salmon River during the weekdays.
