 | Fly Fishing New York: Brutal Conditions 4-4-09 |
Little did I know that it rained heavy on Friday night while I was fast asleep after entertaining a sleepover for my daughter, Isla. Saturday was one of those harsh January days that could make a grown man cry or as I learned, "Bank Out". This is a term that was explained to me by Dan, a long time fishing buddy of guide, Tony G. He went along for the ride on Saturday while Tony guided Mark Olson from Omaha, Nebraska. The word for the day was "brutal" and it was too late for Mark to turn back so he made the best of it and trusted his
guide. It turned out to be a successful day of fishing and Mark was able to hook 5 fish and land 2. Tony hooked up with 3 but could not land his. Mark was determined to catch a steelhead so he could fulfill his dream of fishing the world famous Salmon River in Pulaski, New York. The term, "bank out" was when Dan saw an opportunity to get out of the drift boat only two hours into the trip and walked to a local restaurant/bar to warm up with a cheeseburger and beer. He noticed another drift boat guide with his clients eating hot chicken wings and sipping brandy at 11:00 am. I guess they called it a day. Dan got a taste of what a full time high water shitty weather drift boat guide's day is like and he chose to "bank out" when he couldn't take it anymore. I give a lot of credit to Mark as he hung in there and was so determined he landed two steelhead. He said they were the biggest ones he's ever caught and while they're nice, they're average to us. I guess you'll have to come back again Mark and hopefully Mother Nature will be nice to us and we'll show you what "big" is. Here's what Mark had to say in an email to me the day after.........Hi Dawn,
I sat in the Chicago airport, waiting for my flight back to Omaha, and glanced at the weather map on the television. The only two areas on the map that had strong doppler echoes were Western New York and Nebraska, funny how that works.
I wanted to thank you for scheduling my trip down the Salmon River. This has been on my list of things to do for quite some time. Despite the brutal conditions, Tony put us on on to fish. The Salmon River is a tremendous resource, you are lucky to live so close to such a fine river. Tony is a tremendous guide. Not only does he know the river like the back of his hand, he is a steward of the river. I learned a great deal from him regarding Steelhead fishing and will remain ever thankful.
Tony mentioned that you could email me the pictures that he took yesterday, if you could send them to this account, I would appreciate it.
Once again, thank you for a tremendous trip!
Best regards,
Mark Olson, Omaha Nebraska
