Salmon River New York Fish Hatchery In Altmar, NY

GeneralSalmon River New York Fish Hatchery In Altmar NYThis is the fish ladder at the Salmon River New York Fish Hatchery which is located in Altmar, NY about ten miles from Pulaski and was taken on Saturday April 4, 2009. It's absolutely LOADED with steelhead trout right now. Amongst them will be some brown trout, rainbow trout, and some Skamania steelhead. The hatchery is now taking eggs from the steelhead and this is something to definitely check out.  Here you can learn the process and the cycle and also get

fired up with fishing mojo.  It's very exciting to see.

The Salmon River Fish Hatchery is located on County Route 22, one mile northeast of the Village of Altmar, Oswego County. The Hatchery is open to the public from April 1st (weather permitting) to November 30th, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily. Tours for organized groups may be arranged in advance by contacting the hatchery manager at 315-298-5051.

Simple directions when you're in Pulaski visiting.......just take Route 13 towards Altmar and follow until you see the Salmon River Fish Hatchery sign.  It's simple!

All of these fish will be released back into the river and then they will "drop back" to Lake Ontario.  This takes a few weeks as the steelhead need to feed along the way to regain their strength.....afterall, they just gave their eggs & sperm up!  They will be hungry for ANYTHING and this downstream migration typically lasts until mid May (weather permitting).

So, give us a call if you want to learn how to catch these hungry fish.  We practice all methods of angling.....fly fishing, spey fishing, spin fishing, cenerpin float fishing, etc.  Our experienced drift boat guides will put you right on the fish that are holding in all the major pools.
Call to speak with the owner, Dawn Rucando, personally at 315-489-6115.
