Salmon River NY Winter Fishing Report: 1-13-10

Salmon River NY ReportsNot Good To Do for Here's a perfect example of what not to do if you're practicing, "Catch & Release".  This is not good for the fish and it's best to keep your fish in the water and use a pair of pliers or forceps to remove the hook from the fish.  This is perfectly fine if you're planning on keeping your catch whether it's to have it mounted or to eat it.  It's your choice.  We're just trying to educate the anglers out there that continue to do stuff like this to the fish in the Salmon River NY and

call themselves "Catch & Release" anglers.  While our fish are cold water Winter Fishing, BEST to keep your fish in the water & take picture.animals and are adaptable to 33 degree water temperatures, they cannot handle being played for long periods of time or being handled like pie dough.  Our NY Steelhead, Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout will bite during the winter months however it's during a small window with many different variables.  Typically, during cold winter months, it's not conducive to fly fishing and I mean "legitimite fly fishing".  If you must get out and fish, and you say you're "Catch & Release" only, at least wait until it gets 35 degrees or higher.

During the cold winter months if you're practicing "Catch & Release", it's BEST to keep the fish in the water when taking a picture and not subjecting it to frozen gills or eyeballs.  This is a beautiful Salmon River NY Steelhead to your left.  When handled properly, it will survive....until the next time!

Practicing "Catch & Release" properly will ensure future (and higher) catching ratios!  Have fun out there, be safe, be smart, and be sensitive to our NY Steelhead as they're the most sought after sport fish in Oswego County NY!!!
