 | Best Steelhead Fishing: Lake Ontario AND Salmon River |
  The BEST time to fish for Steelhead on LAKE ONTARIO NY is during the months of July, August, and September. Most anglers do not specifically target steelhead on Lake Ontario. They end up catching a steelhead while trolling for salmon. The BEST time to fish for Steelhead on the RIVER is during the months of
 September, October, November, December, January, February, March, and April. Skamania Steelhead are most prevelant during the months of May, June, July, and August. Skamania are a different strain of steelhead and can handle warmer water temperatures. All Skamania Steelhead will be missing their adipose fin (the thumb like find on top just above their tail).
To simplify, Dec,Jan,Feb months are for the EXTREME Steelhead anglers due to the colder temperatures. There are still plenty of steelhead around and ones that enter the Salmon River on a daily basis however most anglers prefer to vacation in the warmer climates like the Florida Keys, The Bahamas, Costa Rica, Belize, etc. Can't say as I blame them!

Note: The BIGGEST (trophy) Steelhead are caught in the months of Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec.
Small Steelhead 1-5 lbs. = "Skipper"
Average Steelhead 5-10 lbs.="Mate"
2010 Most Common Steelhead Caught 10-15 lbs.
Trophy Steelhead= anything over 16 lbs. and up to 24 lbs.
